VMware
Software that enables the virtualization of one or multiple computers on a single host machine.
VMware vSphere
VMware vSphere is one of the most widely used platforms for server virtualization on the market and serves as the foundation for other products and services like VMware NSX, VMware vSAN and VMware Cloud Foundation. vSphere allows you to create and manage virtual servers, that function like physical servers, but share the resources of a single physical server. This improves resource utilization and simplifies IT infrastructure management.
The two main components of vSphere are ESXi and vCenter Server.
ESXi is the virtualization platform where you create and run virtual machines and virtual appliances.
vCenter Server is the service that allows managing multiple hosts/hypervisors connected in a network and sharing their resources.
Key Features of vSphere:
- Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) – Migrates virtual machines between hosts in the cluster to balance the load and ensure that each host has sufficient resources for the virtual machines.
- High Availability (HA) – Automatically restarts virtual machines on healthy hosts in the event of a host failure, minimizing downtime and increasing system reliability.
- Fault Tolerance (FT) – Ensures continuous availability by maintaining a secondary virtual machine that mirrors the primary one, ensuring seamless application operation in the event of a host failure.
- Lifecycle Manager – Simplifies the process of updating and patching ESXi hosts and virtual machines, ensuring security and compliance with the latest software versions.
VMware NSX
is a network virtualization platform that allows virtualizing network elements such as firewalls, VPNs, load balancers, and even physical networks. This provides developers and IT infrastructure managers the ability to automate the deployment, configuration, and updates of network infrastructure since all components are virtualized and implemented as code. This concept is also known as Software-Defined Networking (SDN).
Key Features of NSX:
- Dynamic Security Policies – NSX Service Composer allows network administrators to dynamically assign network and security services to applications. It also allows creating dynamic security groups using custom filters such as vCenter objects, OS type and Active Directory.
- Operations – Integrated operational functions include CLI, port analyzer, IP flow information export, application rule manager, endpoint monitoring, and integration with VMware vRealize Suite for proactive monitoring, analysis, and issue resolution.
- Automation and API – NSX uses REST API, simplifying integration with third-party products and services also enabling the connection of NSX with cloud management for extended automation capabilities. Integration with vRealize automation and OpenStack cloud management is availiable as well.
- Advanced network – Quickly and efficiently introduce new services with a highly scalable and automated platform, that covers networking, security and load balancing from layer 2 to layer 7 and is designed for any workload. NSX can also provide network services such as routing, DNS, DHCP or functions of network elements like firewalls.
VMware vSAN
vSAN is a software-defined storage (SDS) solution integrated into vSphere, that pools storage resources from multiple servers to create a shared storage infrastructure. This enhances storage efficiency, performance and scalability. VMware vSAN is enterprise storage virtualization software supporting hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI).
Key Features of vSAN:
- Scalability – vSAN offers a flexible storage infrastructure that can easily be scaled up or down by simply adding or removing disks according to your business needs. This simplifies storage management and eliminates the need for specialized storage hardware.
- Resilience – VMware vSAN ensures high availability and resilience for virtualized workloads. It offers redundant array of independent disks (RAID) and erasure coding for data protection and automatically repairs failed components, minimizing the risk of outages.
- Central Management – Fully integrated with VMware vSphere, it allows centralized management of virtual machines and storage resources, simplifying management and increasing efficiency. Its seamless integration with vSphere API enables advanced automation capabilities.
- Reduction of hardware costs – Utilizing vSAN, which leverages the local storage resources of ESXi hosts, eliminates the need for dedicated storage hardware. This reduces costs and simplifies deployment. Additionally, it provides efficient data compression and deduplication, helping to lower overall costs.
